August: Helping Afghan Refugees & Census Data

Yesterday, 12 U.S. service members were killed and many others wounded in violent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones; I cannot imagine the grief and heartache they must be experiencing. God bless our service members who were killed, and their families who they left behind. The numbers are unclear but it is estimated that 60+ Afghans were killed and many more wounded. My thoughts and prayers are with these brave people who were trying to get their families to safety, desperate to escape the violent and deadly rule of the Taliban.

Thank you to those of you who participated in our joint town hall, if you missed it and would like to watch, you can view it here. Welcome back to school! Whether you’re a student preparing to return, a parent sending your child off to school, or a teacher readying your classroom, best wishes to you as you start a new year! It’s been a busy month and I wanted to give you an update.

Unified Economic Opportunity Commission: International Subcommittee Assignment

I am excited to be serving on the International Subcommittee for the Unified Economic Opportunity Commission. Utah has quickly become the crossroads of the West and is increasingly being recognized as a global leader. I look forward to the work I’ll be doing working with my colleagues and the executive branch.

Helping Afghan Refugees

Salt Lake City is one of nineteen cities across the United States that will be receiving Afghan refugees in the coming weeks following the Taliban takeover.

Here's how you can help Afghan refugees arriving in Utah: donate money, donate household items & furniture, volunteer to help, or sign up to be a refugee foster parent. For a list of ways you can help, click here.

Twentieth Anniversary of 9/11

The Major Brent Taylor Foundation presents an interactive commemorative museum experience highlighting the events of September 11, 2001. The event will run from September 9-11 and will be held at the Weber County Fairgrounds. The goal of the event is to serve as an educational gathering location that respectfully honors the events of 9/11 and subsequent sacrifices for and contributions to fighting terrorism. 75th anniversary of the UANG

I was grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Utah Air National Guard at Wingman Day. We are fortunate to have such incredible men and women in the UANG. To learn more about the Utah Air National Guard and their unique missions, visit their website here.

Census Data & Redistricting

We knew our population was exploding in the southwest corner of the valley, and the census data only confirmed it! Our district grew 102% from a population of 36,841 in 2010 to a booming 74,638 in 2020. You can read the full redistricting census data report here.

The redistricting process has begun! I am looking forward to traveling across the state as a member of the Redistricting Committee. We will be holding public hearings to gather input, listen to Utahns, and receive feedback. While in-person attendance is encouraged, public hearings will have a virtual option. Click here to view the full schedule and participate in this once-in-a-decade opportunity.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to represent you, to work with you and for you, on issues important to our district and state. Please feel free to email me at cpierucci@le.utah.gov with legislative concerns you might have.
